Capo Bianco Beach

Complete Guide to One of Elba Island’s Most Beautiful Beaches

Capo Bianco Beach is located on the northern coast of Elba Island, within the municipality of Portoferraio. It is renowned for its white pebbles, the striking white cliffs surrounding the bay, and its crystal-clear turquoise waters, making it one of the island’s most photographed beaches.

This guide includes everything you need to plan your visit, including how to get there, where to park, available facilities, the best time to visit, and nearby attractions.

Where Is Capo Bianco Beach?

Capo Bianco Beach lies about 1.5 km (0.9 miles) from the centre of Portoferraio, along the stretch of coastline known as the Costa Bianca (White Coast), famous for its white rock cliffs and exceptionally clear waters.

Other popular beaches nearby include Le Ghiaie, Padulella, and Cala dei Frati, all of which can easily be visited on the same day.

How to Get There and Where to Park

From Portoferraio’s ferry port, follow the signs to Le Ghiaie and then continue toward Capo Bianco. A short downhill road leads to the parking area located above the beach.

Walking Access

From the car park, a staircase leads directly down to the beach. The walk is short but includes several steps, making it less convenient for pushchairs and visitors with reduced mobility.

Parking

Paid parking is available close to the beach entrance. During July and August, spaces often fill up early in the morning, so arriving early is recommended. Alternatively, you can walk from Portoferraio’s town centre in approximately 20–30 minutes. Parking availability, fees, and regulations may vary throughout the season.

What the Beach and Sea Are Like

The beach is made up of small white limestone pebbles that reflect the sunlight and enhance the sea’s vibrant blue shades.

The shoreline stretches for approximately 250–300 metres (820–980 feet) and is enclosed by high white cliffs that shelter the bay. The seabed gradually deepens and alternates between pebbles and submerged rocks.

Water shoes are recommended for greater comfort when walking on the beach.

The best sea conditions generally occur during calm weather and with southerly winds, while the Mistral wind can reduce water clarity and wash Posidonia seagrass onto the shore.

Facilities

During the summer season, the beach may offer the following services:

  • beach club;
  • public beach area;
  • sunbed and umbrella rental;
  • beach bar;
  • toilets and showers;
  • lifeguard service during operating periods.

The availability of services may vary depending on the time of year.

Snorkelling and Activities

Capo Bianco Beach is widely considered one of the best snorkelling spots on Elba Island. Its rocky seabed and proximity to the protected marine area of Lo Scoglietto support a rich variety of marine life.

The areas along the side cliffs are particularly interesting for observing fish, small underwater crevices, and Posidonia seagrass meadows. For a safe and enjoyable snorkelling experience, it is advisable to wear a mask, fins, and footwear suitable for walking on pebbles.

Kayaking and pedal boat rentals are also popular on calm days.

Best Time to Visit

From May to June and from September to early October, the beach generally offers pleasant weather with fewer crowds.

In July and August, Capo Bianco is one of the busiest beaches on Elba Island. To find parking more easily and have a better choice between the public beach and equipped areas, it is advisable to arrive early in the morning.

Late afternoon is another excellent time to visit, when the sunlight highlights the contrast between the white cliffs and the turquoise sea.
